Bushwick and the Housing Crisis

Eva Sanchis of El Diario has published a series of articles for the newspaper on how the foreclosure crisis has impacted Bushwick. The Brooklyn neighborhood has been one of the hardest hit by the housing recession and Sanchis's slate of articles just go to show which New Yorkers are taking the worst toll in this damaged market.

Here is a link to an English language digest of what was a three article report (our Spanish speaking readers can find the first of the original articles right here)

Additionally, The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC hosted Eva Sanchis. This is the link to a podcast of that interview.

Screamstress interviews Richard Ledes

Screamstress, a horror site written and managed exclusively by women, interviewed Richard Ledes about Foreclosure. Below is a bit of the interview, but you can read the whole thing here.

The marketplace is flooded with stories about the paranormal, hauntings and possessions. How does Foreclosure stand out in the crowd?

At its best, Horror puts us in touch with what is beyond our control and the sense that the repetition of our everyday experience is a thin sheet of ice through which we can fall at anytime. We are ambivalent about this possible loss of control and loss of our regular routines, at the same time craving it and dreading it. This is both a universal condition of our modernity and a unique one that inflicts each of us in a way just as particular as our worse nightmares. The trick is to capture both the universal and the particular in a well-told story brought to life by exceptional performances, a great score and sound design and great cinematography. This is what we are striving for. As the title “Foreclosure” suggests, we think our story is timely.

An Interview with Richard Ledes

The editor at Shock Til You Drop recently asked Richard about the influences and ideas behind Foreclosure. Here's a sample of the interview:
Ledes loves the element of isolation involving someone where the houses in a particular neighborhood were foreclosed. Asked if his film stemmed from the recent house market crisis, Ledes agrees right now is "totally the environment for our film. It picks up on a number of dimensions around the housing crisis that, when I started writing it, I had no idea how long it'd go on. Nor was I aware the ghost theme would become such a scene."
